The third phase of South Dublin County Council's In Context, 2006 –2009, built on the underpinning principles and learnings gained from the previous two phases of commissioning and was further informed by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism’s General National Guidelines for delivery of Per Cent for Art Schemes, published in 2004. This project was commissioned under  In Context 3, of which the principle component was to create time for the artists to engage with the context.

Description:

The Marker Tree is a highly visible landmark, seen from close and far, day and night, for travellers and for residents. It is a distinctive gateway to South Dublin County. Based on the outlines of a tree the Marker Tree comprises an industrial style “trunk”, embellished with brightly coloured steel “cushions” in place of branches and leaf clusters. The idea marks the merging of rural and urban boundaries which are key to the identity of the county.

The sculpture was fabricated by Ferrum Lassercut, lighting by Studio Dinniber.  Michael McAdam, Engineer, Roads Dept. was South Dublin County Council's engineer, consultant engineer was Kavanagh Mansfield & Partners
