Description:
Maighread Tobin created Rhythm, Cloak and Embrace , a rolled-metal sculptural triptych, as a commission for the opening of the new Civic Theatre, Tallaght. Inspired by the dramatic moods of the theatre and located in the foyer, above the box office.
The work cosists of 3 panels, each panel suggesting a different mood and using colour to re-enforce these feelings. The panels are:
1. All that is good. There is rhythm in the rolling shapes which are about to wind and inter-wind. Ribbons of soft curved shapes wind through the piece. Yellows and light colours emphasis purity.
2. The dark side of life. An upright black cylinder opening at the bottom, pierced by horizontal length of black rods suggests the opening of a sinister dark cloak taking you in and wrapping you up.
3. Embrace. This shape indicates the embrace of two rolling forms with ribbons moving in and out of them giving a sense of movement and flow, the passionate side of life. The colours used for this are red, yellow and other warm colours.
"The origins of the work are based on theatre, its mood and all it suggests – the forces of good an evil, happiness, sadness, energy and movement, sound and music, light and dark. I felt the space demanded strong dramatic shapes, colour, movement and light. The lines of the building area quite geometric and hard edged so the shapes I have introduced are curved and energetic and are daringly trying to escape form the recesses in which they are fixed. I have used colour light sources within the piece to give more effect, exaggerating shadows to suggest movement, mood and atmosphere." Maighread Tobin
