In Context 3 Mediation Commission by Sarah Searson

South Dublin County Council SDCC
Dept. of Environment Heritage and Local Government
In Context 3

Context Background:

The third phase of South Dublin County Council's In Context, 2006 –2009, built on the underpinning principles and learnings gained from the previous two phases of commissioning and was further informed by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism’s General National Guidelines for delivery of Per Cent for Art Schemes, published in 2004. This project was commissioned under  In Context 3, of which the principle component was to create time for the artists to engage with the context.

The mediation commission, awarded to Sarah Searson, was an essential aspect of the In Context 3 programme. The mediation commission supported an ongoing dialogue between the In Context 3 artists, their artwork and the local community. This fostered interest in and debate around the art projects undertaken and allowed greater understanding and interaction between the various people and communities involved.

Mediation Projects included:

In Context 3 Essays - These essays from five different critical writers focus on main artistic commissions of In Context 3

Film Maker in Residence - Artist and film maker Enda Mac Nally was commissioned to create short documentary style films about the In Context 3 artists as part of the mediation strand of the programme

Insight @ Alight Education and Outreach Programmes - A programme developed for the In Context 3 exhibition 'Alight' which took place in RUA RED, this included guided visits for children, a teachers and educators evening, screenings and the postcards project where artist Julie Merriman worked with group of children from around South Dublin County to share experience of place through drawing and writing.

In Context 3 Newsletters which marked the work of the artists and the development of the programme over 3 years.

The first was produced to coincide with Satellite, a serise of public events in February 2008  and the second on the occasion of Alight at RUA RED in November 2008.

What is Public Art ?  Booklet for children,  a guide to the In Context 3 Public Art Programme.

Residencies December 2007 to February 2008 - Two artists, Michelle Browne and Barabara Nealon, were commissioned to make work / research over a short period in response to the South Dublin area.
